Humus vs. Hummus

The English Version:
And the Cajun way I say it, that is.

HUMUS

The rotted plant matter you spread on your garden to enrich it is humus.

Humus is the dark organic material in soils, produced by the decomposition of vegetable or animal matter and essential to the fertility of the earth. It improves the fertility of the soil and is therefore for plant growth.

The correct pronunciation of humus is similar to that of pronouncing human.
[ HYOO - MUH S ]

HUMMUS

The chickpea spread you dip your pita into is hummus (or hoummos). Turks call it humus, but that spelling of the word is better avoided in English: your guests might suspect you are serving them dirt.

The correct pronunciation of hummus:

humm = like your humming a tune
us = as in you and I

With two m's it is 'mmm-mmm' good to eat!
